Information for Physicians
The Oncofertility Consortium is a national, interdisciplinary initiative designed to explore the reproductive options for patients diagnosed with cancer or other serious diseases.
Advances in cancer therapeutics have significantly decreased the mortality rate among young cancer patients, with nearly 75% now surviving their disease. Yet, these powerful, lifesaving therapies also threaten the fertility of these patients, even as they now face the real possibility of life after cancer.
Researchers and clinicians within the Oncofertility Consortium are investigating new methods for improving the fertility preservation options for young patients with cancer and other serious diseases, and finding ways to communicate these options to patients at the time of diagnosis, before treatment begins.
To achieve these goals, the Consortium seeks out ways to encourage collaboration between oncologists and reproductive endocrinologists and develop opportunities for training a new oncofertility scholar who can bridge the gap between these disciplines and effectively communicate fertility-preservation options to patients.
In this section, you can find out more about the National Physicians Cooperative (NPC), a national network of institutions dedicated to facilitating the translation of basic reproductive physiology research to viable fertility-preservation options for patients diagnosed with cancer and other serious diseases.
