"While the science of fertility preservation for adolescents with cancer is advancing, the social science research in this area is lacking. Specifically, there are only a small number of studies about the psychological reproductive concerns in the pediatric oncology population. These studies have provided groundbreaking information for future research, but also illustrate the challenges in conducting research in this area. This article comments on those challenges and presents solutions for confronting them."

Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University's Oregon National Primate Research Center may have good news for women at high-risk for ovarian cancer who also want to have children. The research suggests that a layer of cells, which serve as the "breeding ground" for ovarian cancer, may be removed yet allow the women to have children. This would be a vast improvement over the current prevention strategy for women at high risk for ovarian cancer: Removal of the ovaries entirely.

At 29, Chicago native Tiffany Majors was diagnosed with breast cancer and with that diagnosis, she learned that the treatment which could potentially save her life, could also leave her infertile. Knowing that starting a family was an important goal to her and her husband, Majors banked 6 embryos before beginning her cancer treatment at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Many young women with early breast cancer consider fertility to be a priority; however, most women do not receive information regarding fertility preservation prior to cancer treatment. In this study, knowledge about fertility and decisional conflict were measured in young patients with breast cancer considering future pregnancies. The findings suggest that targeted and timely fertility information may reduce decisional conflict  and increase informed choice.
