2013 Oncofertility Conference: Cancer and Fertility Around the Globe
Monday-Tuesday, September 9 & 10th, 2013
Prentice Women's Hospital
250 E. Superior Street
On September 9th and 10th, the Oncofertility Consortium® hosted its seventh annual conference with the theme Cancer and Fertility Around the Globe. This international conference attracted more than 150 researchers, clinicians, advocates, and trainees dedicated to ensuring reproductive health for cancer survivors whose disease or treatment may impair fertility. People from six countries, fourteen advocacy organizations and companies, and 50 medical centers and universities attended the two-day conference to hear recent advances in ovarian cryobiology and transplantation, emerging methods to mitigate fertility loss in cancer patients, and the impact of reproductive desires on tamoxifen adherence, among many others.
Samuel Kim, MD, from the University of Kansas and the International Society of Fertility Preservation, and Nao Suzuki, MD, PhD, from St. Marianna University and the Japanese Society for Fertility Preservation provided two exciting keynote addresses that significantly advanced the field. Short courses in lab and clinical techniques also engaged the broad audience.
An evening reception to celebrate global oncofertility culminated in remarks from the president-elect of the American Medical Association (AMA), Robert Wah, MD, who reflected on the field of oncofertility, and on the policy advances that are being spearheaded by the Oncofertility Consortium® and the AMA to ensure insurance coverage for fertility preservation treatments on state and national stages.
